High Daniel

The most beautiful voice I have ever heard. I think I could listen to him talk all day. I still don't quite understand why he is not my husband.

Describing Words

Black sheets hung in the midnight sky
My body rolled out onto cotton petals
So cool against my skin.
Candles flickered against the walls
Competing with the moonlight
Your silhouette dripped from every corner of our room.
Tree frogs peeped back and forth like a young heart beat
Inside the ribs of our swamp.
Summer waves crashed into my window
The air smelled like you.
Your sticky skin expelled heat onto me
Forbidding me to tie the midnight black sheets together, toss them below
And escape into the nectary-wet darkness.
I fell asleep in your arms.

Empty

"She lifts her skirt up to her knees,
walks through the garden rows with her bare feet, laughing.
I never learned to count my blessings,
I choose instead to dwell in my disasters.
I walk on down the hill,
through grass, grown tall and brown
and still its hard somehow to let go of my pain.
On past the busted back of that old and rusted Cadillac
that sinks into this field, collecting rain.
Will I always feel this way?
So empty, so estranged?"

Car Rides In Early Spring

The Visit

My sister sat next to me in a vacant subway car. We didn't have anything to talk about so I looked at the posters on the wall. The one directly in front of me was written in spanish. I wanted to know what it said but I knew I  would never know. My sister was reading a magazine, her three fingers spread across the shiny cover. Her nails were long, smooth and painted a sheer pink. The car stopped at Union Square and a few people shuffled in. I looked at every face. My sister glanced at a man's shoes.  We were practically out of the door when she looked behind me and said " You forgot your bag!" I jumped, grabbed it and peered at the spanish writing as I ran to catch up to her.

Reconstruction

He mangled memories
Tree frogs in the swamp
I can't listen anymore

for a friend

Be kind to me.

Did they tell you, you should grow up
When you wanted to dream?
Did they warn you, better shape up
If you want to succeed?
I don't know about you, who are they talking to?
They aren't talking to me.

I'm higher than high, lower than deep.
I'm doing it wrong, singing along.

Red, red, red, oh.

So long in this house. It's a big one, full of scarecrows, even now.

He goes along just as a waterlily.

All my armor falling down in a pile at my feet.
And my winter giving way to warm as I'm singing him to sleep.

Happiness

I always say I should be happy just to be alive but it's hard to think that way, to be that grateful. Discovering happiness shouldn't be that easy.
